6th Dec 2007 - My 1st Handkerchief & a lovely dinner

I’m into my 2nd last week of school now as the school holidays draw nearer. Nothing spectacular has happen except for the occasional parties such as the Arabic party which I mentioned 2 post ago and this interesting party which was the China, Hong Kong, Singapore & GREEK winter party! Haha, I am totally clueless as to why the Greeks were included since it seems at odds with the other societies. Maybe perhaps Greece is one of the EU countries nearest to Asia? Anyway, I went to that party with my international friends. As expected it was dominated by Chinese, regardless of nationality. However, I did feel a little out of place at the party although I knew quite a number of people from China and Hong Kong. I’m not sure as to why as well, but I think I was one of the few Chinese hanging about with an all European crowd and doing stupid stuffs! There was also this International Students Christmas Party which I attended at the last minute which was way below expectations. I should have studied instead haha.

I reckon the nicest event that I attended, over the past week, was the Singapore Society Christmas Social. We went to this Spanish restaurant in town that looked real cosy. The menu is a little misleading as well because everything looks cheap. That is until you factor in the size of the dish and the portion per dish, it’s in fact kind of costly. But we had good fun, being with a Singaporean crowd once again. I shouldn’t use the word “crowd” in all honesty as it would be a mistake. There are only a handful of us, fewer than 20, that are in Durham. Oh yes, we had this guy from El Salvador who joined us as well. Seriously, he can speak mandarin better than most of us, since his enunciation of all the Chinese characters are way better than us! Hehe, the reason for his fantastic command of Chinese was because he used to study in China, and for some reason, he likes everything about China!

I met this friend from Portugal 2 weekends ago, when she decided to visit my friend in Durham. Coincidentally it was her birthday as well, isn’t it cool to fly off for your birthday and spend it elsewhere? I have never tried that before, so maybe I should in the near future. Anyway, she’s called Rita but I can never get the pronunciation of her name right in Portuguese. Haha, so I say it something like “Crrrriiiipta” when I tried to say her name in her native language! She’s a very nice girl, actually she’s 26 years old, hmnz perhaps the term girl may be a little too young for her! Putting that aside, she’s fun loving in nature and despite knowing her for a couple of hours, we had a lot of fun together with the rest of the international students. We were all in the college bar till it closed, following which we sojourn to my kitchen where we made a hell of a din! I’m glad we managed to make her feel that her birthday was well spent. In addition, it was the birthday of another of the international students from Bulgaria, so it was a 2-in-1 celebration! It was an awesome smashing get-together session despite the simplicity of it.

Nearly forgotten about it, but I went to York over the weekend. I was pretty excited about it as I heard it was really nice. However, I was kind of disappointed because it wasn’t as beautiful as what I would make it out to be. It was, in many aspects, like a bigger Durham. They have roughly the same shops, with the exception of Mango & Zara in York but not Durham, so it was similar to walking a greater distance to go to the same shops haha! But I did take quite a number of pictures there, shall post some up later. Most of my photos are in my friend’s camera though, haha, I’m still waiting for that lazy bum to upload the pictures and send them to me.

In my 23 years of my life, I’ve never owned a handkerchief before and neither have I use one. However, just a little while back, a friend gave me a handkerchief… haha don’t go away thinking it’s a cheapskate gift, mind you, it’s from a designer label. Anyway the purpose of the handkerchief was for me to use it as a pocket square. I would have to admit that it’s actually quite chic. Furthermore, it’s the thought that matters more when it comes to giving gifts, if I’m not wrong to say so? Because it’s my 1st handkerchief I received, it is automatically conferred the title of “special gift”! I actually spent an hour or so trying to learn how to fold a pocket square…

Last night, I prepared a meal which was painstakingly put together. Haha, in order to cook the meal, I had roughly 3 weeks of practice, in particular, roasting chicken thighs DAILY till I’m so tired and sick of them! Thankfully, I managed to reap the fruits of my labour as the entire dinner turned out great. The ambience was right as well as there was instrumental music playing in the background. It was akin to dining in a restaurant although it was in my kitchen! Hmnz, maybe I should let you peeps in on what I prepared last night. And so *drum roll*, the menu consisted of fettuccine in Aglio Olio style served with prawns, honey glazed chicken, with pepper & salt on one side and herbs on the other, with mushrooms drizzle with honey & herbs beneath it and buttered asparagus under the mushrooms and for drinks, chocolate, with a tinge of Irish flavour, served cold. Yummy, I must say for I was impressed by my own cooking and the own layout of it! Think I shall post the picture of the dinner up as well to make you guys drool! All in all, it was a really lovely dinner which would be a part of my memories even with the passage of time.

Wow, initially I didn’t know what to blog and I ended up typing so much already. I only decided to write an entry because I was just done with my research which is due tomorrow. To end off, I shall leave you with these words…
